12 Ways To Give Your Website a Boost

Your website is the hub of your business, the place people turn to first when they need information, services, or products. You want your website to be attractive, engaging, and relevant, so people find you and find what they’re looking for as quickly as possible. You might offer a killer product or service. But if your website doesn’t show up when people are searching, you’re missing out on leads.

Try this simple website audit on your own to see how well your website is working and identify possible issues.

Remember, you can always reach out to a local website audit expert like Beanstalk if you need the professionals to handle it.

In the meantime, here are 12 easy things you can check to make sure your website is operating smoothly and maximizing conversions:

1. Does each page of your website have a focus keyword?

Each page of your website should focus on a keyword that highlights a specific aspect of your business. Even if you run a business that sells flowers and chocolates, you should consider making one page that focuses on flowers and one that focuses on chocolates. People searching for flowers don’t want to have to skim through information about chocolates to find what they need.

Creating a narrow focus for each page or aspect of your business allows for users to quickly find exactly what they’re looking for. Focus keywords provide a seamless experience from search terms to landing pages.

2. Do your website’s pages use <H1> headings?

An <H1> tag is an HTML heading at the top of a post or page that clearly conveys what the reader can expect to discover by reading the page. There should be one <H1> tag on each page of your website.

Interesting headlines can encourage visitors to continue reading and assure them that they have found what they are seeking. They provide a small SEO boost on each page.

3. Have you written meta titles and meta descriptions?

Meta titles and descriptions are what users see when they organically stumble across your website in search engine results. They should be clear, relevant, and unique to encourage people to click on your site.

Interesting meta titles and descriptions promote a positive user experience, are more likely to get clicks and lead to more conversions when the information on your website matches what people are seeking.

4. Do the images on your website have alt descriptions?

Alt tags are text descriptions of images. They convey the purpose of an image in situations where that image can’t be seen, like for the visually impaired and for search engine crawlers.

Images are a dynamic and effective way to convey a lot of information. When images aren’t available, alt tags allow you to convey some of that information with text. Alt tags are another place you can include important keywords in a post or page.

5. Does your website contain duplicate content?

Duplicate content is content that appears more than once on your website. It can happen if you update your site and don’t redirect your old pages to new ones, or if you include the same information on multiple pages.

Duplicate content makes it hard for search engines to determine which of your website’s pages are most relevant, so it can negatively impact your search engine rankings.

Use tools like Siteliner.com to find out how much duplicate content your website contains.

6. Does your website have a sitemap?

A sitemap is a roadmap of your website. It is a list of all of your website’s pages that tells search engines how your website is organized.

Sitemaps are highly encouraged because they boost SEO by allowing search engines to find everything on your website.

7. Is your website redirecting to a secure version?

The www resolve simply means that when you type in your website’s address with or without “www” at the beginning you’ll be redirected to the secure version of your website.

If your website doesn’t redirect to the secure version, when people type in different things to reach your website, they’re actually hitting different pages that look identical, meaning that your website is going to be interpreted by Google as having duplicate content.

To check this, try typing your website’s address without “www.” at the beginning. If your website is redirecting to the secure version, you should land on a page that begins with “https://”.

8. Do you need to renew your domain registration soon?

We recommend that you renew your domain for the longest amount of time possible. Your domain name gains authority as it ages, so websites that have been around longer are interpreted as more trustworthy than newer sites.

You can use ICANN Lookup to check when your domain was created and when it will expire.

9. Is your website mobile responsive?

A mobile responsive website automatically adapts to the size of a mobile screen. Viewing a website that isn’t mobile responsive from a phone is frustrating. Mobile users will likely click away from your website rather than mess around with small buttons and unreadable text.

The quickest way to test if your website is mobile responsive from a desktop screen is to reduce the size of your browser’s window to roughly the width of your phone.

10. What is your site speed?

Your site speed is a measure of how fast pages on your website load and how quickly users are able to interact with elements of your site.

A slow site can turn away users before they’ve even seen anything. And, with more users than ever before using mobile devices to access websites, mobile site speed has become critically important.

Use free websites like PageSpeed Insights to find out your site speed.

11. Do your pages and posts contain calls to action?

A call to action provokes an immediate response from your audience. After reading your great content, a call to action like “Sign Up,” “Call Today,” or “Buy Now” encourages your audience to complete an action.

Calls to action motivate customers. If you are selling a product or service, it is something a customer will expect to see. The call to action conveys the intent of a given page and boosts interaction on your website, helping you land more leads and conversions.

12. Is your website’s message immediately clear?

If a complete stranger stumbles across your website in their search results, is it instantly clear what your business does? People today expect to search for something, click on a search result, and immediately find what they are looking for. We live in a fast-paced world! If your purpose is not clear within moments of them landing on the page, they won’t hesitate to click away. Besides, there are millions of websites out there – they can easily find another similar company.

The point of SEO is to create a cohesive experience for the user, from the time they type something into Google until they are ready to take action on a page. Websites that get the most conversions make their path to conversion as simple and effective as possible.

—

That about wraps it up! Take a stab at the tips above to check out how your website is doing.

What Can You Find Out From a Site Audit?

If you are looking to increase your online presence and optimize your site for conversions, a website audit is essential. A site audit looks at the many aspects of your website to identify what’s working and where there is room for improvement. There can be many different goals behind site audits. With Beanstalk, a comprehensive site audit examines the following in detail:

Site Health – user experience, functionality, site speed

SEO – the on- and off-site elements that make your website visible to searchers

Traffic – the number of people visiting your site, and how relevant they are

Auditing your website will help you inspect your site’s technical framework and infrastructure, assess search engine optimization, and analyze how easy it is for users to navigate your site.

All of these things help you check your website performance, boost conversions, and help you improve your SEO. The ultimate goal of a site audit is to uncover anything that Google might penalize you for so that we can address it and help you to conquer the online marketplace.

Here are some elements of a site audit and what they reveal about your site:

Site Health

User Experience
A simple look at your site can help identify snags in the user experience. You want to make it as easy as possible for someone to perform the action that you want them to make on your site, while still making it seem like it is their decision. Have someone unfamiliar with your site poke around and write down everything that might be a conversion limitation as they flow from page to page.

Functionality
This search is to confirm that your site is linking to the secured version, you have no 404 error pages, and that each page on your site is operating as it should. All of the technical aspects that make up your site, such as asset minification and caching will be assessed.

Site Speed
Running a test for site speed allows us to see if there are any opportunities to improve the speed of your site. Slow site speed is something that Google will penalize you for, and it can often be a one time fix. Some ways to speed up your site include enabling compression, minifying CSS, JavaScript, and HTML, and reducing redirects; to mention a few.

Site Security
Cybersecurity is of the utmost importance in today’s technological age. Consequently, running a site audit can help you notice any vulnerabilities on your site to potential security breaches.

SEO

We scan your site to make sure that each page has a focus keyword, properly optimized meta titles and meta descriptions.

In addition, we make sure that each page only has one H1 heading. Finally, we make sure that each asset on the page is cached.

We also make sure that each image has an image alt tag and that the URL structure of each page is clean and short.

Equally as important as the scans mentioned above is making sure that there is little-to-no duplicate content on your site.

What is duplicate content on a website? Duplicate content is defined as content that appears in more than one location on the internet. Google heavily penalizes sites with over 20% duplicate content. Keep your pages and posts original!

Traffic

Finally, when performing a site audit, we take a look into the traffic on your site via Google Analytics. We like to understand the demographics of your site. Who is visiting? Which pages they are visiting? What is their page flow (what path users take)? Which devices are they using? What channel are they finding your site through?

Hopefully, now you understand why auditing your site is so beneficial. From measuring website performance to improving your SEO to boosting conversions, audits can be a game changer. All of these things combine to help give you the upper hand in the online marketplace in which we all operate today.

Not so long ago, Google announced a major move that many web designers had seen coming for quite some time: the advent of mobile-first indexing. For those in the digital marketing community, especially those who specialize in search engine optimization, this was a major development, one that caused a massive shake-up in how marketers and designers approached SEO and web development respectively.

You’re unlikely to have missed the boat when it comes to the news, but you also might not know exactly what such a sea change that mobile-first indexing brings to the digital marketing landscape. The move changed how Google categorizes your sites, their ranking, and the ability for consumers to find you and your products easily. If you’re wondering why optimizing your sites for mobile-first indexing is so important, here’s a handy guide as to what this new normal means and how to survive the post-mobile-first indexing internet.

Mobile-First: Not the Same as Mobile-Ready

Some of you may be rolling your eyes already. “We’ve already been optimizing for mobile devices,” you might say. “All our sites have mobile-ready versions that are easily accessible.” That’s great; having mobile-ready sites are ideal, considering how much web traffic comes from mobile devices in today’s connectivity-rich environment. But mobile-ready and mobile-first are not the same things.

Previously, the weight Google gave to mobile versions of a site was a welcome bonus. Desktop sites that also had a mobile version would benefit from a modest bump as a result. Now, though, it’s the opposite — the mobile version of a site gets top billing, while the desktop site, while not an afterthought, is no longer considered primary. Mobile-first, though, isn’t mobile-only. It’s absolutely true that Google is caching the mobile version of your site now, you’ll still benefit from having a fully-functional desktop site as well.

The Impetus Behind the Change

While the sky isn’t exactly about to fall when it comes to mobile sites versus desktop sites, there are plenty of things to be gleaned from Google’s decision. The impetus behind the change indicates a different philosophical approach for the company. Mobile technology, in Google’s view, has grown in popularity to the point where it’s reached a threshold that puts it in a position of primacy. As a result, the company’s core approach to search ranking has been changed to reflect this new normal.

It’s not a complete 180 from Google’s previous approach but it is a major detour. Before the mobile-first decision, desktop sites were the search industry standard when it came to crawling, caching, and evaluating for authority, backlinking, and so on — and this is where SEO and other digital marketing efforts were rightly focused. Web developers would tag mobile URLs as mobile, or reserve a specific subdomain for their mobile sites, and then spend the rest of the time on other, desktop-centric pursuits.

Now the roles have been reversed. All that TLC desktop sites were receiving from developers and SEO experts is no longer exclusive; you’ll need to split the difference, or perhaps tilt the scale a bit more towards your mobile web development, to ensure your digital marketing efforts are having the desired effect. It’s not exactly a paradigm shift, but it’s enough of a change to merit a moderate reevaluation.

Necessary Steps

Good news is that the mobile-first rollout has been slow and methodical. Google learns from its mistakes (Google Glass, anyone?) and mobile-first indexing was instituted first and foremost on sites that the company determined beforehand that won’t feel a negative impact. If your site is already mobile-responsive, or your desktop and mobile sites are functionally identical, you’ve likely transitioned without even noticing.

That being said, there are a few friction points to address. Page speed and load time should be checked to ensure your mobile site is responsive enough. Images and other dynamic site elements will need mobile reconfiguration where appropriate. Keep in mind that collapsed content, or content occluded behind tabs, is still considered visible content in mobile-first indexing. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean the crawler is ignoring it, so be thorough.

If you have completely different mobile and desktop sites, however, you may benefit from a more complete overhaul. Ensuring that content, metadata, and general data structures are all congruent. Sitemaps, app indexation, and search console verification should all be mobile-ready and congruent as well. Finally, ensure that you’ve got enough server capacity for your mobile site. Being served up first in SERPs could easily overwhelm a secondary host server, especially for sites with large desktop bandwidths.

There is a bit of good news if you’re wondering though. Some things, such as switchboard tags, won’t need fiddling with. That is, of course, only if you’ve implemented them in the first place! Either way, you won’t have to modify them in any way.

The Beginning of a New Age

At this point in time, several months into the advent of Google’s mobile-first transition, there’s no real use in trying to deny that mobile optimization is here to stay. With Google leading the way it’s only a matter of time before the smaller players adopt these new paradigms, and as the dominoes continue to fall there will be renewed need for SEO marketers and developers alike to adapt to the new normal.

Now is not the time to hesitate or adopt a “wait and see” approach. It’s best to dive in headfirst to the mobile-first optimization. All the hard work you’ve already done on your desktop optimization certainly won’t go to waste, and desktop browsing is unlikely to ever go away completely.

In any industry, there will be people who try to game the system. Search engine optimization is no different. So-called black hat SEOs are constantly looking for shortcuts, constantly seeking to gain an edge over their competition through any means necessary.

Their methods used to be a lot more successful in the past. Tactics like keyword stuffing, content scraping, sketchy link-building schemes, and cloaking are slowly fading into obscurity. That doesn’t mean there aren’t still people who try to use them, of course; It just means that those people are destined to fail.

These days, there are two types of black hats left in the SEO field.

The first operates on a fundamental misunderstanding of how search actually works. They see that black hat tactics offer short-term gains in traffic (or cause short-term damage to the websites of their competition) and dive in. They dedicate a lot of time and effort to avoiding penalties at the hands of Google’s algorithms.

The second knows their tactics don’t work, but they don’t care. Instead, they sell their black hat techniques and SEO ‘expertise’ to webmasters who don’t know any better. They’re not actually interested in helping their clients. They just want to make a quick buck.

Both camps are to be avoided – and it’s even more imperative that you avoid falling into either one. But how exactly can you do that? How can you tell the difference between black hat SEO and authentic SEO?

In a few ways.

Black Hats Don’t Care About The End User

When you build a website, your first thought should be offering something of value to your visitors. Traffic and ad revenue are important, sure – but they should not be your primary focus. If the strategies you’re looking at involve generating large amounts of low-quality hits or tricking users into clicking on links, run away. The foundation of good SEO is excellent, sharable content that organically attracts links, not what a black hat SEO is going to tell you.

Black Hats Guarantee Placement

Like it or not, SEO is not an exact science. You can never guarantee that someone will rank on the front page of Google. At most, you can offer to improve their visibility and bring in more quality visitors and prospective leads. As a general rule, if someone offers a 100% guarantee, they’re probably not to be trusted.

Black Hats Attack The Competition

Last but certainly not least, SEO is largely concerned with your own site. You should be focused on making what you offer as high-quality as possible. Sure, you might check out the competition to see how you can one-up them, but you’re not doing anything past that.

Anything that involves stealing content, generating negative SEO, or somehow attacking a competitor’s website is not only black hat, but also potentially illegal.

Keep Your Hat Clean

Search Engine Optimization is by no means an easy or exact science. When hiring someone to manage your SEO, make sure you ask for details on client success stories and how they are going to deliver their promises. It takes time, effort, and care. Anyone who tries to tell you different is either a fool or a black hat – possibly both.

In 2015, Google made the announcement that RankBrain was in the top three when it came to its ranking factors. Which is all good and well, if you understand what RankBrain actually is. If you don’t, it can seem confusing.

In this post, we will explain what RankBrain is and how you can optimize your site in preparation for it.

Is RankBrain Really That Important?

Google usually keeps relatively quiet about the exact factors that play a part in ranking sites. This has not been the case with RankBrain at all. In the short time it has been in operation, RankBrain became one of the most important ranking factors. So, yes, it is very important and will continue to be.

What Is RankBrain?

Simply put, it brings search engine and artificial intelligence together. It is an intelligent system that helps with the sorting of results for searches. The emphasis of this system is on finding the most relevant results based on the phrases used in a query.

What makes it different? If the system comes across a term it does not understand it can guess what it means and call up similar phrases. It is also better at understanding the relationship between different words.

Say, for example, I run a search stating, “I want the Best Little Restaurant contact number.” In earlier incarnations of Google, the “the” in that sentence would have been ignored. But, as you can see here, it is important to the search. It signifies that you are looking for a specific restaurant, rather than a list of the best restaurants in your area.

It is capable of learning, so as time progresses it gets better and better at determining the context of the search. But, what is even more exciting is that it follows users when they click onto the site.

It does this as a way of determining the value of the site. If the follower has what Google deems a positive interaction with the site, it will boost the ratings of that site.

Positive interactions are where people stay on the site for longer or take the time to explore it. By contrast, negative interactions are where people cannot be bothered to stick around for a while. If your bounce rate is high, Google will see this as an indication that your content is not worthwhile.

What Is Important To RankBrain?

According to SEO Tribunal, there are two things that it will mark you on.

How long people stay on your site for.

The click-through rate.

How Long People Stay On Your Site

The system measures the time spent on the page from the first click in the search engine results through to the time users click back to the same results.

The longer someone stays on your site, the more it seems as though you are offering good quality content that is relevant to the search term used. It is a legitimate way of determining whether or not the site is any good and whether or not it is worth recommending in future.

If several visitors spend a fair amount of time on your site, that is seen as a good indication that the content is, in fact, of better quality.

To improve the number of time visitors spend on your page is not rocket science. You have to ensure that you give them every reason to stay on the site. The best way to do this is to offer content that they will want to look at.

It doesn’t have to be mind-blowing stuff either as long as you stick to the following rules:

Make it interesting: That 10-page treatise on the history of fabric dye will no doubt be of interest to some people. For most, however, it might be considered boring. Why not summarize the main points into a well-written post and then have the link there for those who want more info.

Keep it flawless: You have heard this before. Even a small typo can dent your credibility online. Make sure that the content is polished properly before it ends up on your site.

Go for content with a little more substance: This is a delicate balancing act. If you make the content too long no one will want to read it. If you make it too short they won’t really get much value out of it. The recommended standard of 300 words counts as too short. An article between 1,000-2000 words gives you the chance of giving a more thorough explanation without overdoing it.

Keep it well organized and appealing: This is more a design issue than anything else. It the simplest factor to get right. Make sure that you break the text up into manageable paragraphs and do use subheadings throughout. Keep the page looking clean and uncluttered.

The Click-Through Rate

Another twist when it comes to RankBrain is that the results are not set in stone. The system will sometimes boost a site to a higher position even if it doesn’t deserve to be there. This is in an attempt to make sure that users are getting the best results possible.

If the site “promoted” in this way gets a higher than average click-through rate, it gets a more permanent boost in terms of ranking.

So, do make sure that you put a lot of effort into creating a great meta-tag for your site. Tell people exactly what they are getting, but do it in a way that makes them want to click through. If you get this right, you can kill two birds with one stone – get more people to click to your site and make sure that those who click through understand what the site is about.

That way, people who really are not interested are less likely to go through and increase your bounce rate.

All in all, RankBrain has changed the arena when it comes to SEO. As it improves, it will become an even greater influencing factor.

In the world we live in today, it’s quite normal for a business to have a website. However, there are some things that are rarely talked about – namely, everything you can do on your website to deteriorate your business. Here are some website mistakes that people often make and some steps you can take to fix them.

Your website is not mobile-friendly

Most people nowadays like to consume their content on their mobile devices. This can be a great opportunity for your website if you optimize it properly. Make sure that all of your content is easy to look at on mobile devices. If it’s not, a user might read it but will quickly move on to websites that are optimized and work well on their devices.

Loading speed is too slow

People don’t like waiting too long to load a page. According to study, anything that loads more than three seconds will often result in high website abandonment rates. To fix this, optimize your images, icons, and videos for best loading speed.

Mike Wallis, an SEO-specialist from Big Assignments, states, “Users are not really keen on waiting too long to get something that they need. This is why you need to take the steps towards optimizing your content so it doesn’t overwhelm your page. Test this, once you optimize it under simulated pressure to see what your loading speed will be like in high-pressure situations.”

Information is hard to find

If a user can’t find information on your company or contact information on the home page, then you know you are doing something wrong. According to a study, 64% of people state that the contact information on a homepage makes it easy to contact the company.

You have to be transparent and give them easy, actionable ways to find you and talk to you. Share your contact information openly and tell them the story of how your company came to be. Pictures of you and your team are also favorable.

Content is not of high quality

The content you share with your readers must be relevant to your niche, interesting, and engaging. You can hire writers, use writing services or write your content yourself. Offer usefulness, actionable tips and various topics that you think will be good for your readers.

Bad content that is packed with keywords will not improve your website’s ranking or popularity. According to a study, 59% of people stated that they wouldn’t trust a website or company if it had mistakes, errors, and typos. Also, Google doesn’t really like plagiarized content so it might be a good idea to use a plagiarism checker like Copyscape or Academized.

There is no CTA

You can’t expect your users to go where you want them to go on their own. You have to create visible, prominent buttons – calls-to-action in order to have them visit a page that you need them to visit. This will result in more sales and better engagement from your customers. The most important case studies show that the right CTA placement, its color and form, can increase the conversion rate up to 121%.

You can have a clear and colorful ‘buy now’ button that takes them to your landing page or if you want them to subscribe a clear ‘subscribe’ button. Remember to place this in a way that is not intrusive to brand new users since they have yet grown to trust you. Make sure to also offer rewards for new subscribers that are relevant to your niche and useful to your users.

There is no social proof

People need to know that you have worked with other people to know that you are a legitimate business. According to a study, nearly 70% of people who make online purchases look at reviews, testimonials, and other social proofs before buying anything. Without social proof anywhere on your website, it might be hard for them to make a decision to purchase from you.

Catherine Lovelace, a Business Developer at Paper Fellows, explains, “Use reviews, newspaper articles, stamps of approval or social media as your vessel to show your users that you are truly a good and helpful website. It might be hard for you to otherwise prove your worth to your potential users.”

Not enough text on your website

While having a lot of visual content is certainly good, not having enough text to balance that out is not. According to a study conducted by CognitiveSEO, content length affects your position on Google Rankings. Text is not only good for SEO but it also allows you to explain your mission and convey your message in a simple, yet effective way.

AcademAdvisor can help you create a brief, yet effective text to share on your pages. Keep in mind that longer content often means better quality and more space for optimization and therefore better Google Ranking. It can also mean making fewer website mistakes.

Making grammar and spelling mistakes

Research has shown that people particularly hate grammar and spelling mistakes and they scare them away. This happens because making these mistakes makes you seem unprofessional and like an illegal company that is only looking to steal their money. Since these mistakes are so easy to fix by using tools like State Of Writing or Via Writing, this can also make it seem like you don’t care enough to improve yourself.

Your website doesn’t have enough visual content

We previously stated that having less text is a bad thing but having only a few visual bits is too. According to statistics, infographics are 3x times more shareable and liked than any other type of content. People like to look at pictures, graphs, and infographics easily created. The good example is Oxessays with their 12 foreign phrases infographic which went viral within a few weeks.

This gives some new life to your content and your website will look a lot better this way. Keep in mind that it’s all about balance. Use enough pictures for the text to be entertaining but also enough text for the content to be informative.

You have a bad layout and design

Layout and design are important elements of your website. They are the first thing that your customers see and this is why they need to be optimal for best results.

Your layout, for instance, needs to be easy to look at and it needs to make sense. Design needs to be neutral and improve your readability – choose colors that complement your font and don’t make anything too bright.

Conclusion

Having a website can be tricky. There are so many website mistakes that you can make to ruin your brand’s image and that could cost you a lot of sales. There are numerous other strategies that one can opt to attract good website traffic that are listed below. Let us have a quick glance over those factors:

Socialize your website on community platforms: There are a number of social media platforms through which one can socialize their online business. Discussing your brand or products on the community page or your brand page and posting quality links on it during the peak hours could help you in getting a good amount of quality website traffic. Also, you can post the pictures of the products or services that you offer to your customers. This will attract a considerable amount of visitors towards your website.

Take your keywords seriously: Just think that you are a customer and want to search the product or service that you provide. What would be the keywords that you will search for? You just have to think from the customer’s perspective rather than the business owner. This will make it easier to understand your customer and ultimately attract them by using those keywords.

Look for Wiki marketing: You can use this strategy for attracting maximum numbers of the potential customers towards your website. You can look for the broken citation links on the Wikipedia and link your website with that. If you find anything related to your brand or services, you can look for high-quality links as it will increase the trust factors among the potential customers or the visitors.

Let the site visitors advertise your website: You can make your site visitors advertise your site by running different types of competitions. Better not to just run a competition, instead run a competition that is won by the entrant through the highest number of votes they get. This way you will not only attract the people in winning the competition but in actual terms you have made people actively advertise for you.

Initiating blogging for your business: Google usually tracks down the record of how long a particular user spends time on your web page. This determines how useful your site was for them. Also, with the better contents there are chances to rank higher on Google. As a result, it is advised to place high-quality and informative contents in the form of a blog on your website.

Look for a good URL: This is the most important strategy that helps any of the websites to get quality website traffic. A good URL is necessary as it is easy and convenient for the customers to remember the URL and land on the website. Besides that, you can opt to include keywords in the name of the business or in the URL of the site that is responsible for attracting huge traffic on your website.

Make yourself useful: You can find a number of people who are interested in your niche or business. There are people who are having queries or issues with the related services or products you offer. You can have a look at various forum platforms or social media platforms where these queries are being discussed. If possible, solve those queries and place a link of your brand in that discussion thread. This is a great idea to drive quality web traffic towards your business.

Thus, the above-mentioned points would surely work in attracting guaranteed website traffic. Besides these, you can promote your business, your own way using different SEO techniques for better online web presence.

It is important that you ask the right questions when speaking with someone who is building your website. For some people this might be confusing, because you don’t have a website made everyday. Today we are listing some questions to ask when you are searching for the right company to make your design happen. Read below to learn some of the most important questions you can be asking.

1. How much do you charge for hosting?
Typically, you will pay a one-time price for the website and a monthly price for hosting. The hosting price can vary from a very small “hosting only” price to one that includes updates to the site. Make sure you understand EXACTLY what you will be charged every month by this web design company.

2. How much are updates once the website is launched?
Websites are not billboards. You don’t launch them and forget about them. Technically, a good website is ALWAYS under construction. Ask your web developer how much updates are. If they charge an hourly rate, ask if it is in one-hour minimums or is it broken into 15 or 30 minute increments. Ask for details.

3. Can I update the website myself?
Depending on your technical ability and desire, you may want to update parts of your site yourself. Find out exactly what parts of the site you can update and which parts must be updated by the web design company. While web design companies offer varying degrees of customer updating, there is no standard. Get specifics.

4. Will you help me get found in search engines?
Most people focus so much on the “building” of the website, they give no thought to how it will be found. Keep this in mind. The old adage, “If you build it, they will come,” is not true. Simply having a website does not guarantee visitors or customers. People must FIND you. Ask your web design company about web promotion services.

5. How long does a typical website project take?
You will get a broad range of answers on this one. Of course, the answer depends on the complexity of your project. If you only need a few pages of information published, your site can be ready in a matter of weeks. However, if you need some interactive elements (blogs, forms, shopping carts, etc), understand that the process could take longer.

Beanstalk Web Solutions can answer all of these questions and more. Give us a call today for more information.
